i stopped taking so much notice of “the news” way back when i realised how one-sided and incomplete the story they told was.

But this year has been drama after drama, & i have never spent so much time following world events & trying 2 make sense of what is going on. From the exposure of News International to the London riots to the campaign to Save Troy Davis, instead of stories created to distract and dissuade people from the truth of what it means to be a human at this point in time, i see the emergence of stories that are starting to reveal long hidden truths to the masses. It is fascinating, exciting and a little scary.

Now i believe the biggest story of the year has come along, Occupy Wall Street. In the USA, in the heart of the beast, peaceful protestors are standing up and being counted. They are being accused of having woolly aims, and a lack of purpose, but I couldn’t disagree more. They are coherently and articulately demanding that the elite 1% who are f***ing it all up for the rest of us right now stand aside and give the power back to the 99%. It’s a simple and elegant statement, especially when contrasted with our revolution in London, which was so heart-breakingly ugly, chaotic and disturbing.

With intelligence and sensitivity, these people are putting together exactly the kind of peaceful direct action that we need, and doing it right where it counts the most. And yet, it’s hardly being talked about. I read that twitter are blocking #occupywallstreet from the trending topics and YouTube are messing with the viewcounts to stop it going viral, i don’t know if that’s true. But i do know that it’s getting extremely limited coverage in the mainstream media, and it is not setting the social media alight either. The fact that the mainstream is neglecting to cover a story like this, other than to belittle it and turn the protesters into a kind of hippy joke, isn’t so surprising. But where is everyone else on this? It’s our duty to keep talking about this and sharing information and giving the protestors the attention they deserve. The mainstream media decides which stories they make big and in which direction to influence everyone’s thinking. Social media is far more democratic; it’s up to us to feed this one, to give it energy, to give it legs and make it run and get everyone talking and feeling excited about the Occupy Wall Street movement. Maybe it’s the simplicity of their ideal that is going over people’s heads, but nothing is more imperative right now: the removal of power from the elite, the dismantling of the horror machine that capitalism has become, and seeking solutions that are more gentle, compassionate, and human.
